AKC Announces The Most Popular Dogs In The U.S. For 2014

This breed may never have taken home the Best in Show title, but the Labrador Retriever is still #1 one with North Americans!

Talk about a never-ending winning streak! The American Kennel Club (AMK) has just released its list of 2014 Most Popular Dogs in the U.S., and the Labrador Retriever is holding firm to the top spot. This is the 24th year in a row the Lab has been the most popular breed in America, which makes it the longest consecutive reign at the top in AKC history. Long live the Lab!

But wait… what’s this? The Bulldog won’t be kept down! Gaining popularity in 2014 is the Bulldog, which climbed one position to take the number four spot. And another trendy Bulldog breed that’s all the rage with the hipster crowd, the French Bulldog finally broke into the top 10 (booting the Dachshund down to for the first time in nearly 100 years, coming in at number nine. Don’t turn your back on those Bullies, Labs! They’ve got their eyes on the prize.

And while many breeds gained tremendous popularity in 2014, they didn’t make it into the Top 10. Making a big leap in popularity over the past decade include the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon, jumping 38 spots from 112th in 2004 to 74th in 2014; the Havanese (from 52nd in 2004 to 25th in 2014); the Border Collie (from 60th in 2004 to 39th in 2014); the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever (from 118th in 2004 to 96th in 2014); and the Black and Tan Coonhound (from 140th in 2004 to 120th in 2014).
