Architects for Animals displayed its acclaimed ‘Giving Shelter’ exhibit recently, displaying unique outdoor dwellings for homeless cats.

Architects for Animals is an awareness group that plans events to benefit animal welfare organizations. Architecture and design firms who participate join individual architects and designers in efforts to provide homeless animals with protection and refuge from the outside elements they face.

This year, they brought the “Giving Shelter” exhibit back to the Herman Miller Showroom in Culver City, California, and the benefits from the sold-out event went to the Los Angeles-based company FixNation. FixNation is an organization that is committed to supporting Trap-Neuter-Return programs for homeless cats. They offer free neuter and spay services and other low-cost services for homeless cats, in the Los Angeles area.

Top architects and designers participated in the opportunity to design, build and donate outdoor dwellings for cats to escape the elements. The shelters were on display at a cocktail reception on October 19, and an auction featuring 28 cat food bowls donated by celebrities runs until 9 p.m. PST October 31. The bowls were donated by the likes of Jackson Galaxy, Charlize Theron, Elvira, Beau Bridges, Clint Eastwood, William Shatner, Tricia Helfer, Morgan Fairchild and Jay Leno, and proceeds of the auction also benefit FixNation.

FixNation’s Co-Founder and Executive Director is Karn Myers, who says that this year’s designs were considerate of how cats would interact with the shelters. Myers says that the shelters are works of art, but have practical application for homeless cats as well.

Los Angeles is estimated to be ‘home’ to one to three million homeless cats. The need to reduce that number and take care of existing cats is what motivates Myers, who along with her late husband Mark Dodge, founded FixNation in hopes of saving massive quantities of cats from euthanasia.

You can still support these cats too, by checking out the online auction for celebrity cat bowls, but remember, time is running out!
