California Passes Law That Allows Dogs To Dine On Restaurant Patios

Take your dog on a dinner date – new law lets your dog dine with you

It’s a great day for Californian foodies who want to bring their dogs out to eat with them. The state just passed a new law that makes it legal for you to bring your dog out to a restaurant.

Dubbed the “Dining with Dogs” law, Gov. Jerry Brown signed Assemblywoman Mariko Yamada bill last week. The law allows dogs to join their owners on restaurant patios. If you’re bringing your pooch with you, he needs to stay in an outdoor-dining section, be on a leash, behave, and not be in the same area where food is being prepared.

But just because it’s legal, restaurants can still ban canines by outdoor tables if they choose. It’s up to the individual eatery to decide whether or not to accept the policy.

If you live in LA, you’ve probably noticed dogs joining their owners on the patio. That’s because it’s been legal to do so since 2012 (although Los Angeles City Council voted to support the bill this past spring).

The law will go into effect on January 1, 2015, but some restaurants have been allowing dogs on their patios for years. We’re glad that it’s official and hope that other states adopt this policy in the near future. And for all you hot dogs in California – bone-appétit!
