A non-profit animal welfare organization helps you ensure your pet gets continued lifetime care in case they outlive you.

When you get a pet, you make a lifetime commitment. But what happens if your pet outlives you? Regardless of your age, it’s essential to have a plan in place, just in case, that ensures your fur babies will be taken care of even if you’re not there anymore.

2nd Chance 4 Pets, a nonprofit animal welfare organization, helps pawrents make all the necessary arrangements for their pet’s continued care- in case they die or become sick. While nobody likes to think about worst case scenarios, it’s essential to be prepared for them, especially if you have someone entirely dependant on you. Amy Shever, the director and the found of the 2nd Chance 4 Pets stresses out the three most important steps every pet parent should take:

Have a committed caregiver

This could be someone close to you that is both capable and willing to take care of your four-legged companion if you should pass away. In case you don’t know anyone who’d be a good candidate, ask your vet or pet sitter for recommendations. Alternatively, you can also look into lifetime care facilities or local animal welfare groups.

Document care instructions

When it comes to the faith of your furry best friend, relying on someone’s word is not good enough. Contact a lawyer to put a will or a contract in place, which would legally ensure your cat or dog will be cared for throughout their lifetime.

Set up a trust fund

Food, medical bills, toys, grooming- it all adds up. If possible, start setting some money aside to provide the necessary funds for your pet’s lifetime care even in case you’re not around. Additionally, you can set up a pet trust or include them in your estate to make sure they’ll be provided for.

If you are single and live on your own, 2nd Chance 4 Pets provides free emergency ID card you can print out and keep in your wallet. In case of an accident, this card would help alert people to the fact you have a pet waiting for you at home, and who to contact in this situation.

Every pet parent should plan for their pet’s future. You never know what tomorrow may bring, so make certain that even in you’re not there anymore, your precious four-legged companion is safe and happy with someone else who loves them.
