Living the vegan life isn’t for everyone – and that goes for many pets. But what do you do when your beliefs and preferred pet don’t mix? You ask the Hairy Dogfathers for their advice!

Hey guys,

I have been in a relationship with a super awesome girl, and things have been moving along well! We have moved in together, and are taking about taking the next step in our relationship – adopting an animal. I had a cat growing up, and would love another one again. I really don’t mind litter box duty, it’s a small price to pay for all the love and cuddles! Now, my girlfriend is a total animal lover, so much so, she’s a vegan. She says she simply can’t stomach having an animal around that eats meat. What do you suggest?

Dear Vegan and Petless,

Interesting dilemma you have. As you may be aware there are animals that are naturally vegans, others that are not, and some that can be. If your girlfriend is really against animals that eat meat, a cat will simply not do since they get quite sick if they don’t maintain a meaty diet. Some believe that dogs can be vegan, and most pet food stores carry vegan kibble.

Personally I support those people who choose to be vegan, but don’t believe that it’s something that should be forced upon others, including pets. I would recommend looking at a pet that is naturally a vegan like a cute, cuddly, bunny rabbit.

Dear Vegan and Petless,

I am glad to hear that you two are considering getting a pet. Since your girlfriend is already into animal welfare, head on over to your local animal shelter!

Make your first trip a research and planning trip only, promise yourselves that you won’t be bringing anyone home with you, until you have had a chance to do your research. But vegan friendly pets might include rabbits, guinea pigs and budgies. All of these animals have lots of love to give and sadly, are common in shelters. Why are they so common in shelters? It’s because people fall for their cute looks without doing the proper research first. So once you spend some face time with these creatures, hit up Google and do your research! Good luck and let us know what you decide.
