For most of us, bringing home a new dog entails a visit to our local shelter. But for one man, with obviously too much money to burn, it means dropping a cool $2 million on a golden Tibetan Mastiff puppy.

An unnamed 56-year-old Chinese property developer reportedly paid 12 million yuan, (about $1.9 million) for a one-year-old, 90-pound dog at a luxury pet fair in Zhejiang, China over the weekend. This breaks the old record set in 2011, when a red-maned Tibetan Mastiff sold for $1.5 million.

Now, you may ask yourself, what kind of tricks does a $2 million puppy do? It must speak at least three different languages, be able to prepare delectable dishes from around the world and charm guests with his witty and urbane stories from his jet-setting jaunts around the world. Nope. He’s just a really cute puppy. Granted, the golden-haired Tibetan Mastiff puppy is a rare breed known for its lion-like hair and stature (it is said to be a descendant of the lion) and is a status symbol in China.

Although this does seem like a huge waste of money for a “status symbol” (albeit a super cute one, the businessman will be using this Tibetan Mastiff to breed, which can earn him up to $16,000 in “stud fees.”
