Grand Anglo-Français Tricolore Basics

Though he is quite rare outside his homeland, the Grand Anglo-Français Tricolore is a talented hunting breed that any hunter would be lucky to own. These dogs are known for their strong hunting instincts and excellent stamina as well as their typical hound-like features. Though they may adjust to family life, this breed is born and bred to hunt.

The Grand Anglo-Français Tricolore is a talented hunting breed that any hunter would be lucky to own.

Origin

The Grand Anglo-Français Tricolore was developed by crossing various French scenthounds with English (Anglo) Foxhounds. He is closely related to the Grand Anglo-Français Tricolore et Orange and the Grand Anglo-Français Tricolore et Noir, only distinguishable by color. These breeds were developed in France during the 1800s and the word “Grand” in their name is a reference to the size of the packs they are trained to hunt in.

Food/Diet

The Grand Anglo-Français Tricolore is a large-breed dog and should be fed a commercial dog food formulated for breeds of its size. Because this is a hunting breed, however, an active or working breed formula may be more appropriate. Just make sure your dog gets plenty of protein to support his lean muscle mass with adequate fat for energy.

Training

The Grand Anglo-Français Tricolore was developed specifically for hunting, so they are a trainable breed with an inherent desire to hunt. These dogs need little training when it comes to following their natural hunting instincts, though they do need a firm and consistent hand to keep them under control. This breed won’t obey commands from a hesitant trainer and they do have a tendency to become willful or independent at times. Food rewards are a good way to motivate this breed and a few minutes of playtime can be substituted if you don’t want to give your dog too many treats. If kept in the home, this breed will do well as a watch dog but they don’t have strong guarding instincts.

Weight

The Grand Anglo-Français Tricolore is a large breed, standing 24 to 28 inches tall and weighing 75 to 80 pounds on average.

Temperament/Behavior

This breed is born and bred to hunt so they may not do well when kept in a traditional household setting. The Grand Anglo-Français Tricolore has an excellent work ethic and he gets along well with other dogs, but he shouldn’t be kept in a home with small animals. These dogs can get along well with people, including children, but their natural desire is to be out in the field doing their job. Be mindful that this breed has a very high hunting instinct, so he should be kept on a leash outdoors and should be supervised around household pets.

Common Health Problems

As a hunting breed, the Grand Anglo-Français Tricolore is prone to field injuries. Other than that, however, this tends to be a healthy breed. Based on his size, however, there are certain health problems to which the breed may be prone which include hip dysplasia and gastric torsion or bloat. These dogs are also prone to ear infections due to their long and pendulous ears.

Life Expectancy

The average lifespan for the Grand Anglo-Français Tricolore is 10 to 13 years.

Exercise Requirements

As a hunting breed, the Grand Anglo-Français Tricolore has a great deal of stamina. These dogs have very high needs for exercise, requiring at least an hour of moderate to vigorous exercise per day. They also appreciate having a fenced yard in which to play and may do well in dog sports. This breed also needs mental stimulation to keep their minds sharp and prevent problem behaviors.

AKC

The Grand Anglo-Français Tricolore is not currently recognized by the AKC but it is a member of the Scenthound group with the UKC and the FCI.

Coat

The Grand Anglo-Français Tricolore has the typical hound coat which is short with a harsh outer appearance. These dogs actually have double coats, however, which is somewhat unique and they exhibit a tricolor appearance with black, white, and tan coloring. It is the coloring of their coat which distinguishes this breed from the Grand Anglo-Français Tricolore et Orange and the Grand Anglo-Français Tricolore et Noir. Grooming this breed is fairly simple, although they do shed.

Puppies

As a hunting breed, the Grand Anglo-Français Tricolore should be trained for hunting from a young age. Early socialization and obedience training are also very important for this breed, particularly if you plan to keep them in a home setting.
