Non-Alcoholic Wine For Cats Is Officially A Thing

Ever wanted to sit down and enjoy a nice glass of red with your BFF (Best Furry Friend)? Thanks to Apollo Peak, now you can.

Okay, not exactly — alcohol can actually be quite dangerous for pets, but Denver-based company Apollo Peak is bringing us the next best thing.

Boasting cleverly-named varieties such as Pinot Meow and MosCATo, the “wine” contains organic catnip, water and beet colouring to give it a vino-like hue. The white wine flavours are coloured with golden beets instead of the typical red.

The wine is actually brewed like a tea, but because it looks so much like actual wine AND contains catnip, which is very, ahem… relaxing for many kitties, it it only made sense for Apollo Peak to market it as a way to unwind with your feline friend at the end of a long day.

The product actually started out as a joke, until company founder Brandon Zavala realized that there probably were people who would be down for enjoying a glass of “wine” with their cat. Crazy cat ladies of the world, unite!

Surprisingly, Pinot Meow and MosCATo are not the first cat wines to it the market — they’re just the first to be released in the US. Nyan Nyan Nouveau was released in Japan a few years ago, a story that went viral. However, Nyan Nyan Nouveau has one serious problem (aside from the fact that it’s only available in Japan): it’s made with grapes, which can be toxic to cats. (Ummmmm hello, what were you guys thinking?!)

Thankfully, beets are non-toxic to cats, so Apollo Peak’s wines are in the clear,and their formula has also been tested and approved by veterinarians. The only potential caution they raise is that you may not want to share any Pinot Meow with your cat if they have urinary tract issues or diabetes. Beets can change the color of their urine, making it harder to detect actual abnormalities.
