Are you looking to rent a pet-friendly apartment in Atlanta, GA, Queens, NY or San Francisco, CA? If so, be prepared for as much as a 19 percent premium on your rent.

It can be tough raising a dog in an urban area. You don’t have as much living space, you probably don’t have a yard and it’s harder to find green space or a dog park close to you. According to a new survey conducted by HotPads, pet parents will have to shell out an average of 3.5 percent more for a pet-friendly apartment rental than renters without a dog or cat. On top of that, you have about a third fewer apartments to choose from, due to restrictions on rental units.

Compiling its data from apartment buildings from 13 major urban hubs in the U.S., HotPads found that if you live in Manhattan and own a pet, you’re going to pay over $300 in order to let your furry roommate stay. But if you live in Los Angeles, CA, you’re in luck – you’ll pay the same rent as those who are pet free.
