Hear Doggy! Ultrasonic Martian Toy Review

The Martians have arrived – can our brave testing dogs protect us from the Hear Doggy! invasion?

Aliens, as a general rule, are pretty scary. With their oversized heads, huge, glowing eyes and skinny bodies, they kinda creep me out. And don’t even get me started on all that probing business. But when a package of Hear Doggy! Ultrasonic Martian Toys landed on our doorstep, we knew that they had come in peace.

Let’s talk a little about what makes the Hear Doggy! dog toys different. First off, they come equipped with an ultrasonic squeaker. What’s that, you ask? Dogs can hear sounds at a higher frequency (0 to 45 KHz) than humans (0 to 20 KHz). The Hear Doggy! squeaker is out of human hearing range, as its tuned to an ultrasonic range in the 24-28 KHz frequency. That means no more annoying squeaks for that raging headache, but lots of fun for your dog.

Another benefit touted by this product is that it comes with ChewGuard™ Technology. These toys employ a super tough, durable mesh liner inside the plush as well as reinforced, double-stitched seams. Wrapped up in bright colors, the Hear Doggy!™ Martian toys boasts ultra-plush, yet durable construction.

To put this claim of durability and enjoyment to the test, we challenged three different dogs to step up and take on this daunting task. These dogs came in different sizes and ages, as well as chewing intensity.

First up was our resident dog-product tester, Oscar. Now, he may be small, but this little fella hasn’t met a toy he hasn’t eaten or chewed through. This is the dog that once chewed his way through a solid plastic baby gate to get what he wanted (sweet freedom!). Soft, plush toys are a rarity in our home, as he usually tears into them (and the stuffing) in about 10 minutes.

To start this test off, I wanted to see if Oscar could hear and respond to the ultrasonic squeaker. I squeezed the huge Martian head (that’s where the squeaker is housed) and all I heard was a puff of air. Not Oscar. He sat up from his lounging area on the couch and came right over to me, tail wagging. I wanted to see how far of a range the squeaker sound would travel, so I waited until Oscar had settled back on the couch while I went into the bedroom (at the other side of the house) with the Hear Doggy! toy. I squeezed the toy and once again, Oscar came running to me. Success – the silent squeaker works!

Now onto the chew challenge. Like I said, Oscar is a tough and persistent chewer, and he wasn’t going to go easy on this plush toy. After much squeaker teasing, I finally threw the Martian to Oscar. He went right to work… on the alien’s butt. Let me tell you, if there really was an alien invasion, I would want Oscar on my side.

I knew that the plush didn’t stand a chance in Oscar’s mouth. Plush dog toys don’t stand up to teeth like hard plastic or rope toys. The question here was how long would it last. Most plush toys last 10 minutes before I have to take them away, so that was the time to beat. And as expected, Oscar did chew his way through… but it wasn’t until the next day! That’s the longest a plush dog toy has ever lasted in our house. I was pretty impressed and Oscar was pretty pleased with himself for stopping the Martian threat.

Next up was Buddy, a 5.5-month-old Golden Retriever puppy. Clara and Alec, his owners, knew he was up for the rigorous challenges of product testing, even at such an early age. And Buddy went right to work as soon as he heard the squeaker sound. Now, we all know what tough chewers puppies can be and we’re pleased to report that after four weeks of constant chewing, the Hear Doggy! Martian is still intact. There is some slight pulling at the seams on the Martian’s butt, but other than that, it’s still squeaking away. No stuffing has come out and it’s turned into one of his favorite go-to toys.

Last (but not least) is Dexter. A Newfoundland/Mastiff/Labrador Retriever mix, this large, friendly dog loves everyone. And he was determined to make the Martian his BFF… which he did by chewing, tugging and tossing his new friend. When he wasn’t noshing on its bulbous head, Dexter was dropping it at our feet for a game of fetch or a tug of war. After a week of constant play, he finally put the alien out of its misery by ripping into its body and triumphantly pulling out its stuffing.

So our verdict is that for a plush toy, the Hear Doggy! Ultrasonic Martian Toy is a great choice for dogs that are average to intermediate intensity chewers. Even with an advanced chewer, such as Oscar, it lasted a day, but you’ll probably want your dog’s toys to last longer than that. Considering that plush toys don’t have a long life, I was impressed how long it lasted with our test dogs that boasted powerful jaws and sharp teeth. And I loved the added bonus of a silent squeaker – what a sanity saver! It’s worth the price if your dog doesn’t usually rip into his toys, and is suitable for pooches of all ages. They run from $13.99 to $16.99, depending on the size. To get your own, visit Simplydogsandcats.com or visit your local pet store.
