You know you really love your pet when you’re willing to give up your meal just so your dog has something to eat. But why choose, asked Cara Heitmann? And now, because she asked that question, many people don’t have to make that painful choice, thanks to a new pet food bank in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Heitmann, a social worker at Woodgreen Community Services, started the pet food bank in December and the response has been overwhelming. They haven’t been able to keep up with demand and report food has been flying off the shelves. She says that these pet owners have, in the past, been desperate enough to steal pet food and have had to face giving up their pet because they can’t feed them.
We think that this is a wonderful addition to the social services program and hope that it continues not only to grow, but also to catch on with other programs around the city and across North America. The Toronto Humane Society already offers a pet food bank and this new program highlights the need for services like these in the community. The pet food bank runs Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 841 Queen St. E., Toronto.
What do you think of the idea? Do you have a pet food bank in your community?
